"The tablao is very important for flamenco, it is a school, at the same time as you are a teacher, you always learn something".

El Yunque is one of the leading representatives of the purest cante jondo (flamenco singing), which doesn't make any concessions to fusion. He is also a fervent defender of cante a compás (where the singing follows a strict meter) with the guitar accompanying. El Yunque's importance also lies in his work in the research and recovery of the most ancient forms of certain cantes (styles). In 1983 he earned the Premio 'Don Antonio Chacón' in the Concurso Nacional de Arte Flamenco in Córdoba.
Although he has made some recordings, most of his career has been spent in tablaos. He stayed in Manolo Caracol's tablao, Los Canasteros (Madrid), for twelve years. In this and other similar establishments, he had the opportunity to learn from other great figures like Antonio Mairena, Rafael Romero, Pepe El Culata, Pericón de Cádiz, Juanito Varea, Camarón, Pansequito, Paco Cepero... He has also been part of Dolores Vargas' and Concha Márquez Piquer's companies. His discography offers a wide repertoire of orthodoxy in flamenco singing and is a valuable legacy for future cantaores. In this sense, his record "Sabiduría y duende" (1999) stands out from the rest, and includes fandangos, "Que como yo no hay quien te quiera", which are already known as the fandangos of El Yunque. |
