"In every country or city where I play, I ask the people where I can find a bar with live local music, whether it's in Washington, Istambul, Hong Kong, London or Parla (Madrid). And if there isn't one, and people play (music) in the street, well that's where I go, to see what is done and how it is done and, if possible, to play with them. You can't imagine the things that come out of the mixing".

Tomasito's musical talent is almost unique. With a solid training in flamenco that he acquired in the Santiago neighbourhood (Jerez de la Frontera), he is capable of adapting flamenco to any kind of music, including television advertisements and songs for mass consumption, AC/DC's hard rock sung in a tango style, a break-dance song in a bulerías style, blues, funk, rap, punk, hip-hop…, all of which is done without ever ceasing to play flamenco. His peculiar musical concept has earned him many followers. Navajita Plateá, who are also from the Santiago neighbourhood in Jerez de la Frontera, partly share his trajectory.
Tomasito has cut his teeth in tablaos, flamenco peñas (enthusiasts´clubs) and dancehalls in various Spanish cities, he has been on the television with Lola Flores and has travelled the world with the guitarist Paco Peña. He has also taken his musical creativity to some important national and international festivals like Espárrago Rock, the Festival Actual in Logroño, San Fermín in Pamplona, Womad 2000 in Cáceres… He is the author of a high quality discography, for which he has been able to count on Tino di Geraldo's production work. Artists from varied backgrounds have contributed to his records, like the cantaor Diego Carrasco, the guitarists Isidro Muñoz and Juan Diego, the composer Antonio de los Ríos, El Madriles and Kelvin Ochoa, the singer and composer of Habana Abierta.
Tomasito is also unique and unrepeatable as a bailaor (flamenco dancer), the owner of a distinctive style that cannot be learned in any academy. It is an electric dance, the fruit of his restless and inquisitive character. His record "Cositas de la Realidad" (2002) includes a zapateado (a rhythmic combination of sounds made by stepping with the toe, sole and heel of the foot) by Tomasito himself, as percussion on the song Tacones cercanos. |
