"I sing in a seguiriyas style because I think this cante (style) is above all the other cantes. But I sing in a seguiriyas style and as I have suffered because I experienced a lot of hardship with my children (...) well, I sing remembering these hardships. And there are some lyrics that genuinely make me cry".

Tía Anica la Periñaca, like Juan Talega, did not become a professional singer until she was past sixty, after her husband´s death. Immersed in the Jerez gypsy scene and flamenco culture since she was a child (like Talega was in the Alcalá region), La Periñaca stored up all the knowledge about the typical Jerez cantes (seguiriyas, soleares, martinetes and bulerías), and especially about the oldest forms. In this way she became one of the great preservers of the cantes from her hometown, especially through her participation in the Antología del cante flamenco y cante gitano, recorded by Antonio Mairena, and other recordings like the ones that are part of the anthological Archivo del cante flamenco.
Since she was a child she came to know great figures, with whom she sang when the hard days in the fields were over: el Borrico de Jerez, Sernita, Rafael el Carabinero... or El Tío José de Paula, whose soleares and seguiriyas were masterfully executed by Tía Anica la Periñaca. She also sang, during her professional period, with the accompaniment of Manuel Morao or Parrilla de Jerez. Her memoirs were collected by José Luis Ortiz Nuevo in the book "Yo tenía 'mu güena" estrella" (1987). |
