Raimundo Amador learned flamenco in the street, and in the same environment he came to know the greats of rock and blues who have always fascinated him, and who he has tried to move closer to, without abandoning flamenco: Dylan, Hendrix... His ability to absorb all of the different sounds that he listens to have converted him into one of the main driving forces behind the crossbreeding of flamenco with other forms of music; it was not in vain that he was a founding member of the two bands that were the pioneers and most significant groups in the development of fusion: Veneno (1977), with his brother Rafael and Kiko Veneno and Pata Negra (1981), only with his brother. Raimundo arrived at this crossbreeding stage after cutting his teeth in the guitar accompaniment of bailaores and cantaores from the dynasty to which he belongs, and from the Montoya family, as well as working alongside the flamenco greats: Paco de Lucía and Camarón; in the case of Camarón, he was already looking to make flamenco-rock music.
After Pata Negra split up, Raimundo Amador embarked upon a career as a singer and guitarist, developing and maturing the style that he had created alongside his brother Rafael, now on his own, but always with the assistance of excellent musicians, in the band that accompanies him in his concerts, or who work with him on his records. Antonio Carmona, Remedios Amaya, Enrique Morente, Lole y Manuel, Tomatito, Sorderita, Ketama, Kiko Veneno, Juan Perro, Andrés Calamaro, Mala Rodríguez... and an almost endless list. The most well known contribution, and perhaps the one which Raimundo appreciated the most, was when the blues guitarist B.B. King took part in the recording of his first solo album (Gerundina, 1995) and in one of his concerts in Las Ventas (the capital's bullring) in Madrid, also in 1995.
In his record "Un okupa en tu corazón" (2000) Raimundo Amador has come closer to other forms of music like the Cuban son, Brazilian sounds and even rap, working with Mala Rodríguez. Overall, he represents crossbreeding in a pure state. |
