Pericón de Cádiz is one of the main figures from the Cádiz tradition and a staunch defender of the meter and measure. He is considered a master of the Cádiz cantes, especially those from the tradition of Enrique el Mellizo. His alegrías, soleás, bulerías, cantiñas, malagueñas, tanguillos and chuflas are not just impressed on his records, but also in the memory of anyone who hears them.
His talent and qualities appeared when he was still very young. His career progressed continuously: he started singing in the streets, and he went on to liven up local feasts. Since Pepe Marchena took him on one of his tours, Pericón never stopped working in the tablaos and numerous theatre shows in which he shared the stage with artists like Concha Piquer, La Niña de los Peines, Pepe Pinto, Rafael Ortega, Caracolillo, Josele, Melchor de Marchena, Niño Ricardo... In the last thirteen years of his artistic career he almost exclusively sang in the tablao La Zambra in Madrid.
With regards to his discography, although it is short, we must highlight his participation in the historic Magna Antología del Cante Flamenco (Hispavox, 1982), in which he sings, among other pieces, Seguiriyas de Enrique Ortega, Soleares de Enrique el Morsilla, Bulerías de Antonio el Herrero, Tanguillos y Granaína, and Malegueña Chica de Enrique El Mellizo. In 1990 the book Las mil y una historias de Pericón de Cádiz, by José Luis Ortiz Nuevo (Silex Ediciones) was published. This book allows readers to find out from Pericón himself about the vicissitudes of his artistic life and the period in flamenco that he lived through: the years of the flamenco opera and the years when flamenco regained recognition and value. |
