Pepe de Lucía's singing had the guitars of his two brothers, Ramón de Algeciras and Paco de Lucía, as childhood playmates. With the latter, he shared his artistic beginnings: first, in the band that they formed together, Los Chiquitos de Algeciras, and later in the company of José Greco, Antonio and Sara Lezana. It was also when they were together that they won awards in the Concurso Internacional de Jerez de la Frontera (Jerez de la Frontera International Competition) in 1962, in which they made a great impression, and they have continued to work together in the Paco de Lucía sextet.
It has been in his facet as a composer/songwriter that Pepe de Lucía has obtained the greatest recognition. Camarón, Remedios Amaya, El Potito, Los Chunguitos, La Macanita and Alejandro Sanz are only some of the artists who have performed his compositions. This overshadows the important work for the renewal of the flamenco repertoire that he has undertaken, in spite of being a backing singer who accompanied dancing, for the majority of his professional career. Since the year 2000 Pepe de Lucía has taken up his career as a solo artist again.
Pepe de Lucía also works as a producer. He has discovered several young talents of flamenco, one of the most important of whom is El Potito. |
