In El Pele's family there were never any flamenco professionals, but there were great amateurs who were able to arouse the artistry that he had within him. He is another one of the artists who have been able to innovate starting from a perfect mastery of orthodox singing, and without ever losing these roots, bringing flamenco closer to several other kinds of music from around the world.
In his beginnings, he roamed the streets singing in them, in the tablaos and in fairs to bring some money home. In this environment, it was El Cordobés, the bullfighter, who gave him the artistic name by which he is known. Precociously, when he was only fifteen years old, he won the Primer Premio Cayetano Muriel (1969) (Cayetano Muriel First Prize) and, a few more years later, in 1983, he was awarded two prizes in the Concurso Nacional de Córdoba: the "La Serneta" award for soleares and the "Pastora Pavón" award for bulerías. From this moment onwards, El Pele's reputation travelled beyond his local area, and he started to become one of the best cantaores, thanks to his ability to innovate, his mastery of all the palos (forms), both festive and solemn, and his "magnificent vocal chords made of excellent flamenco metal" (José Manuel Gamboa).
Together with the guitarist Vicente Amigo, in the eighties, El Pele had his greatest successes, some of which are collected in the record "Poeta de Esquinas Blandas". They both came to share a stage with Camarón de la Isla. |
