Pansequito
Male flamenco singer
Name:José Cortés Jiménez
Birth: 1945 La Línea de la Concepción, Cádiz

"Shortly before Camarón died, he told me that the only thing that interested him in the singing that could be heard at the time was Pansequito's singing". Ángel Álvarez Caballero, flamencologist.
Alongside Camarón and Enrique Morente, Pansequito is one of the great innovators of flamenco singing in the twentieth century. The Premio a la Creatividad (Award for Creativity) -the only such prize that has ever been awarded- that he won in the Concurso Nacional de Arte Flamenco in Córdoba in 1974 bears witness to this. As do his soleares and bulerías, which Pansequito extends to include a tragic narrative plot, as happens in romances. He is creative and innovative, and at the same time he knows and masters all the flamenco styles, especially alegrías, soleares and bulerías, but his tanguillos, fandangos, tarantos, martinetes, rumbas and romances, etc. are not to be scorned either.

He was discovered by Manolo Caracol himself when he was only fifteen. Impressed by his singing, he hired him for the opening of his tablao, Los Canasteros (Madrid), in 1963. Pansequito has sung in tablaos and in festivals throughout his artistic career, he has shared the stage with other flamenco greats: Camarón, Juan Habichuela, Pepe Habichuela, Tomatito, Parrilla de Jerez, Gerardo Nuñez and Enrique de Melchor. But it was possibly with Paco Cepero (guitarist and composer) that he enjoyed his greatest successes among the public. He has also travelled all over Europe with Antonio Gades´ company.
