| Name:Francisco Peña Pérez |
| Birth: 1942 Córdoba |
As well as being a magnificent guitarist, Paco Peña is also one of the great divulgers of flamenco, especially abroad (he has been based in London for a long time). He is the founder of a flamenco guitar degree in the Rotterdam Conservatory, at a time when Spain was still a long way away from achieving something comparable. He personally supervises the studies for the degree, which are composed of five courses. Another side of this teaching facet, included as an anecdote, is that Paco Peña was British prime minister Tony Blair's guitar teacher, as well as being his personal friend.
He has composed almost everything that he plays and records. His extensive discography has mainly been published abroad. His most impressive shows include Misa Flamenca, which was recorded with the assistance of important flamenco figures and with the Saint Martin in the Fields church choir.
In Spain he won the Premio Ramón Montoya in the tenth Concurso Nacional de Arte Flamenco (National Flamenco Art Competition) in Córdoba in 1983. Three years earlier he established the Festival International de la Guitarra de Córdoba (Córdoba International Guitar Festival); this festival is not exclusively for flamenco guitar playing, and has a markedly inclusive nature. |
