García Lorca praised the voice of La Niña de los Peines: “voice of the shadows, voice of tin, voice of moss...”. And in 1996 her voice was declared a part of Andalusian cultural heritage by the Cultural Council of the Regional Government of Andalucía. Pastora Pavón is now considered the best and most important cantaora of all time. Her singing, which she described as “singing with a foundation”, is the mirror through which all other cantaoras look at themselves.
Like many other flamenco geniuses, she was a precocious artist. There is evidence of her being a professional when she was only eight years old. Her tradition was that of improvising, although she was strongly influenced by her brother Arturo, the pianist. Her artistic name comes from some coplas (poetic compositions, in verse, used as lyrics) that she used to sing when she was very young, from El Tanguito de los Peines: "...péinate tú con mis peines/ mis peines son de canela" ("...comb yourself with my combs/ my combs are made of cinnamon").
La Niña de los Peines tackled all of the styles, and she was extraordinary in practically all of them. Her seguiriyas, tangos, soleá and saetas are memorable, her peteneras and bulerías are unsurpassed to date, and she even created a new style: the bambera, which came from giving flamenco characteristics to some popular songs proceeding from Andalusian folklore. From that time onwards, it has continued to be sung and important artists include them in their repertoires. |
