Curro and Pelé formed Navajita Plateá in 1992. The combination was perfect from the very start, as there has never been any change in its members, and the progress that is evident in each of their records is surprising. In more than one instance they have been labelled as yet another new flamenco band, but they categorically deny this: "We enjoy listening to flamenco, but we don't feel flamenco strongly enough to be able to sing it"
(Curro); "Calling this flamenco when you're from Jerez may be like discrediting something that already has a recognised reputation". They prefer to say that theirs is "gypsy music that comes from the heart" (Pelé).
What they do not deny is that the flamenco environment in which they grew up has impregnated their music, especially in the case of festive palos (forms), but so have other sounds that they have been listening to since they were young. This is the case for blues and rock, which have been perfectly integrated into their compositions.
Since their appearance until 2003, they have recorded five albums in which they have enjoyed complete freedom thanks to the great reception they have had from the public. With their second record Contratiempos (1996), they already obtained their first gold record, they have shared the stage with Kiko Veneno and Pata Negra, they have been the support group for Chuck Berry, who congratulated them personally, and David Byrne, the former leader of the Talking Heads, has asked for their cooperation. Kiko, the football player who was their playmate when they were boys in their native Jerez, was responsible for one of their early successes. When he was playing for Atlético Madrid, he called them to play in the great white-and-red (Atlético Madrid's colours) celebration of their double triumph in 1998, when they won the Liga (league championship) and Copa del Rey (national cup competition). They had never played in such a packed venue before. |
