Mayte Martín
Female flamenco singer
Singer
Name:María Teresa Martín Cadierno
Birth: 1965 Barcelona

"I re-create the cantes, I reconstruct something that already exists. It is something that involves adapting the cantes to my way of understanding them".
Mayte Martín is not and does not want to be exclusively a flamenco cantaora, even though she acknowledges that her origins are in flamenco, which she learned about by listening to her father's records. In the same way, and at the same time, she became interested in boleros, and set out to record other styles of music throughout her musical career. She has always had a strong desire to sing traditional popular songs.

She had already spent some time singing in flamenco peñas (enthusiasts' clubs) in Barcelona, when she earned recognition after winning the 1987 Lámpara Minera in the Concurso Nacional de Cante de las Minas (National Mine Singing Competition) in La Unión (Murcia). As a cantaora, guitarist and composer, she is closer to traditionalism, where she finds her reference points and inspiration, than to fusion or new flamenco. Possibly the fairest thing would be to say that she seeks a balance between renewal and tradition. In the same way, her style is sober and simple, but full of intensity and warmth.

While she has been approaching other forms of music, Mayte Martín has recorded two bolero records. One was alongside jazz pianist Tete Montoliú ("Freeboleros", 1996) and the other was with Moncho ("Quédate conmigo", 1999).
