Martirio is not a cantaora or, at least, not in the traditional flamenco way. What she does do, however, is to incorporate elements of flamenco into her music. Her most extraordinary feature has undoubtedly been her vanguardist image (ornamental comb, mantilla and sunglasses), as well as the renewal that she brought about in the sevillanas and traditional popular singing, which she re-interpreted in new styles, including rap, rock, swing, tango, guaracha and, most of all, jazz.
She has worked with several artists but perhaps her most fruitful partnership has been the one with Chano Domínguez, with whom she merged traditional popular singing and jazz in "Coplas de Madrugá" (1997), and afterwards in "Acoplados" (2004). She has also worked with other jazzmen: Jerry González and Jesús Lavilla. Furthermore, Martirio works with her son, Raúl Rodríguez, who is a guitarist, composer and producer. |
