Flamenco billy. This is how the Mártires del Compás christened their own music and it is nothing other than flamenco jondo (deep), as far as its foundation and origins are concerned, mixed with blues, jazz, pop, ranchera, rap, reggae, rock, Cuban son, tango ... all of which is seasoned with ironic and sharp lyrics that involve protest and provocativeness, inspired by the current social reality, as it is lived on the streets.
Chico Ocaña is the leader and the soul of the Mártires del Compás. Before founding this band he worked with other artists like Martirio and Kiko Veneno. With the latter he wrote a collection of jondo, or deep, flamenco poems with updated verses, which has not yet been published, and he had also made an early unsuccessful effort to start up the Mártires with his son.
The Mártires del Compás have been representing Spanish music by playing in the most important international festivals for new music or world music: MIDEM, WOMAD, Montreux, Havana... |
