"I don't know how to dance anything other than flamenco, I studied classical (dancing) but I can't dance classical".

María Pagés had a sound training in classical ballet and flamenco dancing. She learned how to dance with Manolo Valdivia, Adelita Domingo, Matilde Coral, Manolo Marín and through the experience of dancing in the most prestigious dance companies: those of María Rosa, Rafael Aguilar, Antonio Gades and Mario Maya... Since 1990 she has her own company, with which she has staged shows of a pure flamenco character (Flamenco Republic. 2000) and others in which she shows her own personal understanding of flamenco (El Perro Andaluz. Burlerías, 1996, La Tirana, 1998), an understanding that allows her to dance flamenco to Tom Waits' jazz music, or to the famous "Singing in the rain". In her company, María Pagés has continued to work with established figures of the dance scene like Manolo Marín and Fernando Romero, but she has also given important lessons to young bailaores who are starting their careers: Juan Carlos Cardoso, Verónica Gallo, Rafael del Pino...
In 1996, she won the Premio Nacional de Coreografía (National Prize for Choreography), awarded by the Asociación de Directores de Escena (ADE, Association of Stage Directors), for her work, "El Perro Andaluz. Burlerías". In the same year, she was named director of the Centro Andaluz de Danza (Andalusian Dance Centre), a post that she left the following year. |
