Manuela Carrasco
Female flamenco dancer
Name:Manuela Carrasco Salazar
Birth: 1954 Sevilla

"I'm one of the bailaoras who is preserving flamenco. Farruco used to preserve it, and he is not here anymore, now only El Güito and a few others preserve it":
A Sevillian bailaora with great strength, temperament and presence on the stage, she personifies one of the purest traditions in flamenco dancing. Without any schooling or teacher other than her daily experience of flamenco rhythms, she is currently an important reference for younger bailaoras. Her art bears a strong relation to that of other great figures like La Macarrona, La Malena, Carmen Amaya and Pastora Imperio.

She made her debut when she was eleven, and at thirteen she was touring Europe, with the company of Curro Vélez. Since then she has danced in the main Spanish tablaos, in many of which she has been the leading solo artist: La Cochera (Seville), Los Gallos (Seville), El Jaleo (Torremolinos), Los Canasteros (Madrid), Caripén (Madrid).

The mastery and depth of her artistry have allowed her to work with the great figures of flamenco: Camarón, Lebrijano, Juan el Habichuela and El Güito, among many others. They also helped her to win important awards, like the "Pastora Imperio" Premio Nacional de Baile (National Dance Award) in the Concurso Nacional de Arte Flamenco in Córdoba in 1974 and the International Dance Award in San Remo (Italy) in 1975.
