"I learned from Javier Molina and I followed his tradition. But I created my own style (…) I think that my most characteristic trait has been my rhythmic guitar playing".

Manuel Morao is one of the greats at accompanying singing and dancing, the best at absorbing the Jerez style of guitar playing, to which he has been able to add his own personal touch. Since he was young he played for great figures: Antonio, Carmen Amaya, Manolo Caracol, la Niña de los Peines, Melchor de Mairena… He has only played as a solo guitarist very rarely, because he is very certain about what the real role of the guitar is: accompaniment.
In 1987, Manuel Morao himself founded the Gitanos de Jerez company, with which he has toured around Spain and abroad, offering the purest flamenco singing and dancing on stage. Some important figures have taken part in this company's work. The group has been able to diversify and currently has its own producer, its own record label, its own audio-visual editor, its training centre, its publishing house…
He has also been one of the divulgers of flamenco. He was the creator of the legendary Jueves Flamencos (Flamenco Thursdays) in 1966, where he used to unveil and promote artists from his region. |
