Guitarist |
| Name:Manuel Franco Barón |
| Birth: 1960 Sevilla |
Manolo Franco is undoubtedly one of the most complete and acknowledged guitarists on the current flamenco scene. His virtuoso guitar playing and his knowledge of the secrets of flamenco singing have turned him into of the tocaores (flamenco guitarists) who is most in demand among cantaores (flamenco singers). It is not in vain that in his beginnings, he was the regular accompanying guitarist for artists of the stature of Antonio Mairena, Naranjito de Triana, Calixto Sánchez and Manuel Mairena.
Formed under Manolo Barón, Antonio de Osuna and Matilde Coral, Manolo Franco is also outstanding as a composer. His record "Aljibe", released in 1986, represents a good display of this facet. He is also the teacher of "Cuadro flamenco" (flamenco company, or group) in the "Rafael Orozco" Conservatorio Superior de Música (a conservatory for higher education) in Córdoba.
Apart from the acknowledgement of cantaores and bailaores, in 1984 Manolo Franco received the 1st Giraldillo del Toque (a guitar-playing award), which was awarded by a jury that was composed by the great names of the guitar from the past century: Paco de Lucía, Serranito, Manolo Sanlúcar, Juan Habichuela and Mario Escudero. |
