Male flamenco singer |
| Name:Juan Peña Fernández |
| Birth: 1941 Lebrija, Sevilla |
"El Lebrijano is possibly the most talented cantaor of his generation. He has an excellent voice, duende (a spirit that represents magic, inspiration, or a trance-like condition that has to do with the delivery or expression of flamenco art) and knows about the traditional styles of different traditions of singing. And ... he feels the need to create". Manuel Ríos Ruiz, writer and flamencologist.

Over thirty records already bear witness to El Lebrijano's career. In these he has shown his mastery of the orthodox art, in the festive palos (forms) and sober ones alike, but he has also shown himself to be an innovator of the cante (flamenco singing). He has brought other musical genres closer to flamenco, like opera (in "Ven y Sígueme", working alongside Manolo Sanlúcar) or the cante de galeras (in "Persecución", cantes de galeras talk of detention on prison ships), and especially Arabic music, looking to find the unity between flamenco and the music of the people who inhabited Spain during eight centuries ("Encuentros", "Casa Blanca").
El Lebrijano comes from a family that is brimming with artists: the family of Perrate de Utrera. He is the nephew of El Perrate, the son of La Perrata, the brother of Pedro Peña and godson of La Niña de los Peines, who El Lebrijano considers the best cantaora ever. He started off on the tablao circuit as a guitarist, accompanying dancers like La Paquera de Jerez, at the same time as he developed his singing. After winning the Concurso de Mairena de Alcor in 1964, he put away his guitar into its case, almost definitively, and continued to accompany dancing, but this time with his singing. Among others, he sang for Antonio Gades for several years.
Both the critics and the public agree in considering El Lebrijano one of the best singers in his generation, for his voice, for his knowledge of the orthodox style and his ability to innovate. He has also been recognised by the great figures of the profession, many of whom he has worked with: Melchor de Marchena, Niño Ricardo, Enrique de Melchor, Paco Aguilera, Juan Habichuela, Pedro Bacán... He is, in sum, a complete and fundamental artist who has left his mark. In 1994 he received the Medalla del Trabajo award. |
