Strictly speaking, Kiko Veneno is not a flamenco artist. It is undeniable that there are elements of this genre in his music, but it also includes elements arising from rock, pop and blues.
He was closer to flamenco in the band Veneno, which he formed alongside Rafael and Raimundo Amador in 1977. It was a band that was short-lived (it lasted one year) and not particularly successful, but it was indispensable in the evolution of flamenco towards fusion with other musical genres, in this case with pop. Many people consider Veneno to be the pioneers of this fusion; however, Kiko Veneno himself considers that there were other predecessors, such as the band Triana.
As a solo artist, his lyrics have got the public hooked, due to their simplicity, but at the same time they have always been full of puns, humour, irony and intelligence. He has composed many songs for Pata Negra and for Martirio. One should also bear in mind that he is the author of Volando voy, a song that was rendered immortal by Camarón when he sang it. |
