The festive cantes and soul of Triana find in Juana la del Revuelo one of their finest performers. This is what the prize that she won performing bulerías in 1983 in the Concurso de Mairena de Alcor shows. She has a great presence on the stage, and is a veritable earthquake of unsurpassable freshness and joy. Her figure is adorned with a basket and pololos (knee-length interior trouser-like undergarment, used as underwear in regional costumes, or by women to do gymnastics) that can be seen below her skirt when she dances. Other features of her singing that stand out are her mastery of the meter and her very flamenco voice, with metallic elements.
Juana la del Revuelo grew up artistically in the environment of the Triana neighbourhood, where she used to sing and dance as an amateur. She started to become a professional accompanying her husband, Martín el Revuelo, until he lost his voice and she took his place. Since then she has worked, on stages and making records, with other artists like Martín Chico (his son), Raimundo Amador, Rafael Riqueni and Mariana Comejo. She also took part in Viejo Patio, one of the projects that Paco Ortega produced. |
