Cañizares
Guitarist
Name:Juan Manuel Cañizares Lara
Birth: 1966 Sabadell, Barcelona

"I grew up in Sabadell, but with an ear in Andalucía. The lads in my neighbourhood had always liked flamenco. It was rare not to listen to something on the street in the evening, played by amateurs, with a very good atmosphere. But what I learned the most from, were the records".
Once again, it was Paco de Lucía who unearthed another musical talent to the world, although before they got together in a trio – with José María Bandera as its third component – Juan Manuel Cañizares had already made his debut and, furthermore, he did so very precociously: he has been a professional since he was fourteen years old, and at sixteen he won the Premio Nacional de Guitarra (National Guitar Prize) in Jerez (1982). His distinctive features are his virtuosity and technical excellence, especially in the elaboration of picados (guitar technique that consists in picking the strings one by one, producing a languid and monochord sound) and other elements of his own creation, which have led him to discover his own style.

Before starting his career as a solo artist, Juan Manuel Cañizares had already worked alongside important figures in flamenco, like Morenito de Illora, Camarón de la Isla, Enrique Morente and Niña Pastori. However, he has also got involved in work with artists that have different backgrounds and different musical styles: El Último de la Fila, La Fura dels Baus, Ana Reverte, Peter Gabriel, Peter Erskine, Rosario Flores, Joan Manuel Serrat, Los Marismeños, Chiquetete.

Cañizares is also a enthusiast of Spanish classical music and especially of the Spanish composer Isaac Albéniz's work. In fact he has dedicated two albums to adapting it to Spanish guitar, "Isaac Albéniz. Sonatas for piano, 3 and 5" and his latest work "Suite Iberia: Albéniz por Cañizares".
