Sorderita was one of the founding members of Ketama in the early eighties. In 1992 he also formed a duo which had innovative intentions with Raimundo Amador, although it failed to materialise. Looking at him with the benefit of hindsight, he is considered the main architect of the renewal of classical flamenco singing. However, the pure flamenco that he learned from his father, Sordera de Jerez, and from other greats that he knew since his childhood, always remains the foundation for his music, and is always present to a greater degree than any other musical genre. In his recordings and performances he is as comfortable and fluent performing flamenco palos (forms) as he is with his most daring compositions.
Sorderita has managed to find a very personal sound and style. He rejects the label of cantaor (flamenco singer), at least the one of a cantaor like his father, but he does accept the definition as a flamenco cantautor (singer/songwriter): he composes, sings, plays the guitar and produces his records himself. To sum things up, he is a very complete musician.
As a composer, he has written songs for other flamenco artists like José Mercé, Miguel Poveda or his brother Vicente Soto. He has also performed as a flamenco concert guitarist on several occasions, and he contributed a bulería de Jerez to the record that was recorded in the Sala Candela (Madrid). |
