José Menese
Male flamenco singer
Name:José Meneses Scott
Birth: 1942 La Puebla de Cazalla, Sevilla

"Good singing hurts"
There are several facts that bear witness to José Menese's importance: he was the first cantaor to perform in the Auditorio Nacional de Música in Madrid (1991); he was the inspiration behind the flamenco festival that is celebrated in his hometown, which was established in 1967, and although he is still alive, his biography (Biografía jonda. Génesis García, 1996) has already been written.

He is the main representative of the mairenista tradition (started by Antonio Mairena), which is characterised by the extreme orthodoxy of its singing, which is completely alien to innovation or fusion. Menese goes beyond strict mairenismo in terms of the styles that he performs. His repertoire goes beyond the basic palos (soleares, seguiriyas, tangos and tonás). José Menese is not a gypsy, although his voice is that of a gypsy, and it is able to express all the depth of the feelings in flamenco.

José Menese's achievements have been recognised on countless occasions, through several tributes and prizes, among which the Premio de Honor Tomás Nitri that he was awarded in the Concurso Nacional de Arte Flamenco (National Flamenco Art Contest) in Córdoba (1965) is the most important. This artist must also take unquestionable credit for having been one of the main divulgers of flamenco among intellectuals and in university milieux.
