He is currently the most famous dancer worldwide. Although he was already the leading light in the Ballet Nacional when he was twenty years old, he achieved worldwide fame with his show Pasión Gitana, which he brought to over thirty countries. Then everything came at once: cinema, advertising, fashion, a perfume, and even a short relationship with the model Naomi Campbell that brought him onto the pages of celebrity magazines.
He started dancing when he was twelve, encouraged by his uncle, the bailaor Cristóbal Reyes. Three years later he was already part of the Ballet Nacional, travelling all over the world. As soon as he became independent, he came into contact with figures like Maya Plisetskaya, Silvie Guillem and Peter Schauffuss. In 1992, Joaquín Cortés set up his own company, whose first show, Cibayí, was performed in Japan, France, Italy, Venezuela and the United States. However, it was in 1995 that he gained international popularity with Pasión Gitana, a show that filled stadia and was seen by over a million spectators worldwide. From this point onwards, modernity and provocativeness, fusion with other musical forms and wardrobes by Giorgio Armani will become characteristic elements of his shows. Soul and Live came next. The latter show is still travelling from stage to stage.
He made his cinema debut under the direction of Pedro Almodóvar in La flor de mi secreto. He then repeated this experience working under Carlos Saura in Flamenco, in which he dances a farruca with his chest out which earned him as many followers as detractors. In 1999, he gave a performance in the opening ceremony of the athletics world championships in Seville. In 2000, the film Gitano by Manuel Palacios, in which he stars alongside the model Laetitia Casta, had its premiere screening. |
