Israel Galván
Male flamenco dancer
Choreographer
Name:Israel Galván de los Reyes
Birth: 1973 Sevilla

The son of the Sevillian bailaores (flamenco dancers) José Galván and Eugenia de los Reyes, Israel Galván started dancing under his father's guidance when he was very young until, in 1984, he became part of the recently established Compañia Andaluza de Danza (Andalusian Dance Company), which was directed by Mario Maya. It was the start of an unstoppable career which resulted in him winning, in a very short time, the three most important awards in flamenco dancing: the Premio Vicente Escudero in the Concurso Nacional de Arte Flamenco (National Flamenco Art Contest) in Córdoba (1995), the Premio El Desplante in the Festival Internacional del Cante de las Minas (International Mine Singing Festival) in La Unión (1996), and the prize of the I Concurso de Jóvenes Intérpretes (1st Young Performers' Contest) in the 9th Flamenco Biennial in Seville (1996).

In 1996 Israel Galván's dancing accompanied Vicente Amigo during the concerts for his record 'Vivencias Imaginadas', and he then worked in shows by other bailaores like Mario Maya, Manuela Carrasco and Manuel Soler, with whom he maintained a very intense personal and artistic relationship. In September 1998 he presented '¡Mira! / Los Zapatos Rojos', his company's first show, in the 10th Flamenco Biennial in Seville. From then on, he has always presented a new show in the Biennial. In 2000, he unveiled 'La Metamorfosis', a complex choreography which was developed with the work by Kafka as a starting point, with music by Enrique Morente, Lagartija Nick and Estrella Morente. Two years later, he presented 'Galvánicas', with themes that were composed specifically on the basis of his experience as a bailaor for the Gerardo Nuñez Trio with whom, in 2001, he toured the most prestigious jazz and flamenco festivals worldwide.

In the 13th Flamenco Biennial in Seville (2004), he presented 'Arena', his latest show, which is devoted to bullfighting, and among his most immediate future projects, we find the film 'Morente sueña la Alhambra', in which he will dance solo, as well as alongside Blanca Lí, providing the choreographies to music by Pat Metheny and Enrique Morente himself, some of whose records he has already contributed to.
