El Güito is one of the great figures of twentieth century flamenco dancing. Furthermore, he was one of the main protagonists of the sixties and seventies, golden years for flamenco due to the brilliance of bailaores and cantaores like Mario Maya, Carmen Mora, El Farruco, Manuela Carrasco, Matilde Coral and El Güito himself, Manolo Caracol, Terremoto, Chano Lobato, Sernita, Antonio Mairena, La Perla… He shared the stage with all of them, some of whom he met in Pilar Lopez's school, where other outstanding figures of dancing in the last century also developed their skills. He was also a pupil, firstly, and an assistant, later, of Antonio Marín Delgado, a well-known crippled teacher who was based in Madrid.
El Güito is one of the most important representatives of deep, orthodox flamenco. His outstanding quality is the strength and sobriety which he impresses onto his movements. He will always be remembered for his performance of the soleá, which has already laid the foundations for a tradition. Another of his milestones was the group that he formed with Carmen Mora and Mario Maya in the mid-sixties, which lasted until 1972, with which El Güito drifted away from classical flamenco dancing. In 1971, the group was given an award by the Faculty of Flamencology in Jerez.
Throughout his artistic career he has received important awards, both at a national and international level: the Sarah Bernhardt Prize (1959) recognised his artistry when he was only sixteen years old, and it was a prize that he snatched from Nureyev; the Premio Nacional (National Prize) of the Faculty of Flamencology in 1997; and the Calle de Alcalá award in 1996 (he is the only flamenco artist to date to have obtained this award, which Madrid gives to artists who have bonds to this city). |
