Without being the creators of the flamenco rumba or the gypsy rumba, the Gipsy Kings have remained in the top sales figures since 1987 with this musical style born from the fusion of flamenco with Afro-Cuban rhythms. The group is composed of the Reyes brothers and the Boliardo brothers, who are cousins and descendants of Spanish families that migrated to France; to Arles, in the south, to be precise. In spite of their long trajectory, there have been few withdrawals from the band, and substitutions have been rare. They are so popular that they have sometimes been obliged to expose impostors who were giving performances and passing themselves off as members of the band, as happened in March 2003 on Italian television. Their distinctive musical style, which also includes rock and Arabic sounds like the Algerian rai, blends their exotic way of life (they are gypsies who are almost nomadic) and their image, not just with regards to their way of dressing, but also to their presence on the stage: three of them play their guitars the right way round, and three of them play it the opposite way round.

The band was formed in 1970, but it did not adopt its current name until 1976. In spite of having released records earlier, their real success did not arrive until 1986, when Claude Martínez became their producer and manager. The first record after this proverbial meeting was Gipsy Kings (1987), which included their first great success, Bamboleo, a rumba version of the song by Julio Iglesias. Since then, their success has been uninterrupted: Djobi Djoba, Mi Fandango, Somos Gitanos... are only some of the songs which have travelled the world, regardless of the fact that they sing in their own language, mixing French, Spanish and gypsy dialects. Among the merits of the Gipsy Kings is that of being the French band that has sold the most records worldwide and one of the non-English-speaking bands that has spent the most time in the hit parade in the United States.
