He is one of the great revolutionaries of flamenco, and without him it would be impossible to understand present and future flamenco. He was the first to adapt the verses of Spanish poets to write his songs. With his enthusiasm for innovating, he created a flamenco mass in which he blended flamenco with Gregorian chanting. He has worked with Indian musicians, and has merged flamenco with rock in his most revolutionary work, Omega, which he made with the rock band Lagartija Nick. Critics have been harsh with him on several occasions, but no one questions his contribution to the history of flamenco.
He became devoted to singing in Granada cathedral and he was still very young when he went to Madrid, where he met cantaores like Pepe el de la Matrona and Bernardo el de los Lobitos. Like almost all of the cantaores from his generation, he began by accompanying dancing, performing in tablaos and taking part in festivals and competitions. His first records date back to 1967 and, although they remained within the classical sphere, they were outstanding due to his personal imprint and a repertoire in which he retrieved old cantes (styles), recordings of which did not previously exist.
He was responsible for the revaluation of the figure of don Antonio Chacón, and he even made a record entitled Homenaje a don Antonio Chacón (1977) for which the Culture Ministry awarded him the Premio Nacional de Música Popular de España (National Spanish Popular Music Prize), the first time the award was won by a flamenco artist. His interest for different art forms resulted in him working in the theatre and cinema, as an actor and as a musician. His daughter is following in his footsteps. |
