"You can't understand flamenco, it is something you feel. The person who is sitting on the chair must feel that what you are doing is something out of the ordinary".

Cristina Hoyos had already spent some time dancing in feasts and tablaos in Seville, and she had even toured the United States with Manuela Vargas' ballet, when Antonio Gades saw her perform. Since then, almost straight away, Cristina Hoyos travelled around Spain and the whole world in his company as the first dancer for twenty years (1968-1988). It was also with Gades that she was the protagonist of the film versions that Carlos Saura made of Gades' three great shows: "Bodas de Sangre" (1978), "Carmen" (1983) and "El Amor Brujo" (1985). After their separation, Cristina Hoyos formed her own company (1989) with which she confirmed the well-deserved reputation that she already enjoyed at both a national and an international level.
Cristina Hoyos' dancing has always been distinctive due to her great technique, largely achieved thanks to what she learned from the great masters with whom she danced, like Farruco, Pastora Imperio, Manuela Vargas or Gades himself. Her arm movement has also received deserved praise. Her shows always strike a perfect balance between the deep-rootedness that characterises her dancing, and modernity. It is a style that assimilates new trends in a conscious way, without any concession made to garish effects.
Among other facets in which Cristina Hoyos has been outstanding, her cinema and television work must be mentioned, like the film Torero (1999), Montoyas y Tarantos (1989), by Vicente Escrivá or the series Juncal (1987), by Jaime de Armiñan. It mustn't be forgotten that she is the driving force behind a groundbreaking initiative: the establishment of the Museo del Baile Flamenco (Museum of Flamenco Dancing) in Seville. It is an ambitious project that, apart from traditional museum exhibitions, will include a stage for demonstrations of dancing, the presentation of new talents, and even a dance school. |
