Carmen Cortés
Female flamenco dancer
Rhythmic hand clapper
Name:Carmen Cortés Pérez
Birth: 1957 Barcelona

Carmen Cortés has a solid classical training -Escuela del Ballet Nacional (School of the National Ballet) and a university degree in Dancing in 1994- and a marked flamenco attitude that comes from her family. The result of this combination is an orthodox dancer, with great control and knowledge about both the baile jondo (flamenco dancing) and vanguardist dancing at the same time, who is daring enough to get involved in innovative projects.

After dancing in many tablaos and on many stages, becoming a member of several dance companies, and becoming the first dancer in Mario Maya's company, in 1998 she formed her own group. With her group, she has been on numerous national, and sometimes international, tours and she has staged a large number of shows belonging to different artistic trends. The ones that stand out among them include A Contraluz (1988), of a vanguardist character; Flamenco-Flamenco (1988), which is a study of flamenco from all its different periods; A Federico (1995), in which she pays homage to the poet from the Generation of 27, and to the elements which have marked the different phases in the history of flamenco, like the bolero, the high-waist trousers, or the mantilla; Yerma (1996), based on García Lorca's drama, and Salomé (1997), based on the play by Oscar Wilde, with which Carmen Cortés enters the theatre; Racial (1999), with which she returns to the most ancestral flamenco; and También muere el mar (2003), based on writings by Generation of 27 poets. In many of these shows Carmen Cortés is the choreographer and the great guitarist Gerardo Nuñez, her husband, is responsible for their musical adaptation.

With her husband, she also carries out an important teaching activity. Every summer she organises some flamenco courses that are well attended and prestigious in Sanlúcar de Barrameda. Another of her merits is that she was first who choreographed the granaína, which is especially difficult because its guitar playing technique is free-style.
