"For me, the bulería is the greatest thing, it is my inspiration".

Bernarda de Utrera comes from the Utrera family of the Pininis. She is also the sister of Fernanda de Utrera, who she has always been extremely close to, at both an artistic and personal level. Her professional career started in the Tablao Zambra in Madrid, in 1957, alongside Fernanda. Since then, it has always been possible to hear her singing in Madrid tablaos, particularly in the Tablao Zambra, but also in Las Brujas or Villa Rosa.
Bernarda de Utrera's singing is outstanding, particularly in the festive styles, and most of all in a bulerías style, as she recognises herself, and as was confirmed by the prize that she won in the Concurso Nacional de Arte Flamenco (National Competition of Flamenco Art) in Córdoba for the bulerías category in 1957. However, the depth and the tasteful manner with which she is able to tackle the deeper styles of singing also deserve credit. She has also been awarded the Premio Nacional de Cante (National Singing Award) of the Cátedra de Flamencología y Estudios Folklóricos (Faculty of Flamencology and Folk Studies) in Jerez de la Frontera, which she shared with her sister Fernanda. |
