A disciple of Pilar López, who gave him his stage name, he has become one of the great figures in Spanish dancing and flamenco. He lived in Madrid since he was very young and he alternated his various jobs with his love for bullfighting until he began dancing with La Palitos. He later became part of the Pilar López company, where he was the lead dancer for nine years.
In 1961 he set up his own company and made his debut as an actor. Curra Jiménez was his dance partner in El Corral de la Morería in Madrid, until Cristina Hoyos took over. He is unquestionably an ambassador for Spanish dancing, and has performed on the best international stages: the Theatre of the Spanish Pavilion in New York, Covent Garden in London, the Wald Symphony in Washington, the Theatre of Varieties in Paris. In 1994, he presented Fuenteovejuna, his latest production, based on the theatre piece by Lope de Vega in the opera house in Genoa.
He has also been successful in the world of cinema, under the direction of Carlos Saura, in Bodas de Sangre, El amor brujo and Carmen. Other pictures in which he took part are Con el viento solano, El último encuentro and Los Tarantos, alongside Carmen Amaya. Antonio Gades was the director of the Ballet Nacional de España (1979-1980) and, furthermore, he is one of the Spanish dancers who has won the most awards: the Vicente Escudero and Carmen Amaya prizes for El amor brujo, the Premio Nacional de Teatro (National Theatre Prize) for the best choreographed performance in 1979, the award for the best show in Buenos Aires in 1974, the prize of the Sociedad General de Autores (General Authors' Association) in 1982, the Premio Nacional de Bellas Artes (National Fine Arts Prize) in 1983 and the Galardón Flamenco Calle de Alcalá (Calle de Alcalá Flamenco Award) in 2002. Antonio Gades died of cancer in Madrid on 20 July 2004. |
