Male flamenco singer |
| Name:José Antonio Chacón Cruz |
| Birth: 1869 Jerez de la Frontera (Cádiz) |
| Death: 1929 Madrid |
The admiration and reception that his singing received from the public was such that the enthusiasts themselves soon re-christened him Don Antonio. Even today, in spite of the years that have passed, he remains unsurpassed, and is still considered the best cantaor (flamenco singer) ever.
He shared the stage and competed with the best cantaores of the time, the golden years of flamenco singing: La Serrana, Las Coquineras, La Bizca, El Perote, Enrique Ortega, Enrique El Mellizo and, especially, Francisco Lema Fosforito. This competitiveness, far from harming the atmosphere on the flamenco scene of the time, was greatly beneficial: the bars came to schedule performances so that they wouldn't coincide, to give enthusiasts the time to go from one establishment to the next.
He was one of the first flamenco cantaores who started earning a high salary for his performances, far above what was usually paid in this period. He also left his mark on the styles that he touched. Granaínas, medias granaínas, malagueñas and cartageneras owe their current form and beauty to Antonio Chacón. |
