Alejandro Sanz
Singer
Guitarist
Name:Alejandro Sánchez Pizarro
Birth: 1968 Madrid

"I think that purist flamencos shouldn't criticise the youths so much, because after all, they open it up to other kinds of music because they want to keep flamenco alive. (...) There is a flamenco technique that is very important, but what mustn't be forgotten is that flamenco has evolved".
Alejandro Sanz is mainly known as a musician for mass audiences. The style of his music belongs to the tradition of light melodic music, with which he enjoys multitudinary attendances at his concerts and massive sales: he has had seven platinum records, shared between Viviendo deprisa (1991) and El Alma al Aire (2001). However, since his early records, he has progressively been moving towards flamenco. And it is precisely his songs which have a stronger flamenco flavour that achieve the greatest success among the public.

Alejandro Sanz, whose parents are from Cádiz, has always been very close to flamenco. He started by playing the guitar in a band that performed versions of songs in a flamenco key. Since his success has allowed him to steer his career, apart from flamencoising part of his repertoire, he has tended to finish his concerts with a piece in a bulería style. In his records, he counts on the cooperation of Rubem Dantas, a percussionist in the Paco de Lucía Sextet, of Paco himself and of the guitarist Vicente Amigo. Many flamencoised versions of his songs have been made by flamenco singers. As a songwriter he is the author of practically all of Niña Pastori's discography, as well as being one of the persons who discovered her. He was the composer and producer for María Vargas during the most recent period when she was recording.

Alejandro Sanz is one of the Spanish singers who has won the most awards. For example, in the year 1997, he received the Premio Amigo and Premio Ondas for the best national artist, the best composer and the best album for Más (1997) and awards for the best single and best video for Corazón Partío. In 1999, he was recognised as the Best Selling Spanish Artist in the World Music Awards ceremony. Finally, in 2002, he was named adopted son of Algeciras, his father's city. It is also important to mention the important success that Alejandro Sanz has had abroad, especially in Latin America.
