La Barbería del Sur is a Madrid band that was established in 1991, which fits perfectly within the so-called new flamenco category. At first, it was a quartet formed by the cantaor (flamenco singer) Pepe Luis Carmona, the son of Luis Habichuela; the guitarists José Miguel Carmona, the son of Pepe Habichuela, and Juan José Suárez 'Paquete', the son of Ramón El Portugués, and the vocalist and percussionist Enrique Heredia 'Negri'. When José Miguel Carmona became part of the band Ketama, he was replaced by El Bola, and later by the electric guitarist David Amaya. Pepe Luis Carmona began a solo career, and the group was finally a trio.
In spite of the numerous changes in their members, and without doing any of the previous ones an injustice, it can be said that the band has been progressively bearing better fruits. At present, the undisputed leaders of La Barbería del Sur are Negri and Paquete, and this is the title of their latest album, which was released in 2002.
Before joining La Barbería del Sur, Negri and Paquete both had an important musical career behind them already, during which they had worked with artists who had different characteristics, like Antonio Canales, El Güito, Enrique Morente, Estrella Morente, Joaquín Cortés, Niña Pastori, Manzanita, Ramón el Portugués, Mecano, Radio Futura and Max Roach. |
