Female flamenco singer |
| Name:Rocío Mohedano Jurado |
| Birth: 1945 Chipiona, Cádiz |
| Death: 2006 Madrid |
At present, Rocío Jurado is mainly known for her great success in light melodic music, the category of music which most of her discography falls under. Nonetheless, she has made several records in which she sings flamenco, among which Arte flamenco (1979) stands out, as does the soundtrack of the film "La Lola se va a los puertos" (1994). In the same way, all of her concerts, although they are devoted to singing popular verses or Andalusian popular songs, tend to end or include one, or a few, flamenco pieces.
Before she became the star that she is currently, Rocío Jurado started off as a cantaora singing in companies. She was on the resident artists´ line-up in Pastora Imperio´s tablao, El Duende, in Madrid, and in Los Canasteros, Manolo Caracol´s tablao. In 1962, she was awarded the first prize for the fandango category in the 1st Concurso Internacional de Arte Flamenco (International Competition of Flamenco Arts) in Jerez.
As was the case with singing, Rocío Jurado also started off in cinema when she was very young. As well as films and television series that she made in Argentina but which were not released in Spain, Rocío Jurado has also taken part in a considerable number of films: "Los guerrilleros" (1963), "En Andalucía nació el amor" (1966), "Proceso a una estrella" (1966), "Una chica casi decente" (1971), "La Querida" (1976) and "La Lola se va a los puertos" (1993), in which she also sings the songs from the soundtrack. She featured in Carlos Saura´s film "Flamenco" (1995). |
