Paco del Pozo is a young cantaor (flamenco singer) of non-gypsy origins whose love for singing comes, as he himself recounts, "from the restlessness of a special relationship with flamenco". When he was eight, he started to acquire knowledge about singing under the guidance of the guitar master Paco de Antequera, making his debut shortly afterwards with the tocaor (flamenco guitarist) from Córdoba, Manolo Molina, with whom he continued his apprenticeship. He recorded his first album in 1985 with Paco de Antequera, and the next year he won an award as the best cantaor newcomer in Madrid. To increase his knowledge, he worked in the Madrid tablao El Corral de la Morería, as part of its resident flamenco group. He began to perform all over the world with different companies that included bailaores (flamenco dancers) with recognised reputations like Lola Greco, Antonio Reyes and Carmen Ledesma. His distinctive and deep voice allows him to master a wide range of cantes (styles), and he also has an attitude that is open to new influences, which has led him to cooperate with the band Jazz Hondo and the classical guitarist José María Gallardo. |
