Ramón Núñez Núñez, better known as Orillo del Puerto, began his artistic career in Madrid in the Sixties, with performances in the tablaos (establishments with a stage used for flamenco performances) Los Canasteros, Las Brujas, Torres Bermejas and Las Cuevas de Nerja. He later took part in European tours, such as the Festival Flamenco - Gitano, alongside artists of the standing of Camarón de la Isla, Paco de Lucía and El Lebrijano.
A brother of Alonso Núñez 'Rancapino', who is a cantaor (flamenco singer) as well, the artistry of Orillo del Puerto was described by critics as "a commotion of bulería in a state of grace". Although Orillo has been mainly acknowledged as a master of flamenco singing and dancing, he also played a role in the film 'Currito de la Cruz' (1965), and he worked with the poet Rafael Alberti in a Finnish production in 1986.
In 1997, a tribute was held in his honour in the peña (enthusiasts' club) Enrique El Mellizo, and another was staged in Madrid in 1999. Many important figures paid homage to him in these events, including Mario Maya, El Güito, Enrique Morente, José Mercé, Paco Cepero, Pansequito, Juan Villar, Chano Lobato and El Pipa.
Orillo del Puerto died on 13 September 2004, when he was 72 years old, in the Puerto de Santa María (Cádiz). |
