Moraíto belongs to a dynasty of great flamenco musicians, mainly guitarists, that starts with Morao El Viejo, continues with his uncle Manuel Morao and his father, Juan Moreno, and is stretching further through his son Moraíto Hijo. He is currently considered the best guitarist representing the Jerez tradition, and he is one of the guitar players who are most in demand to accompany dancing or singing.
In a career path that is common to several other musicians, he started out and cut his teeth in tablaos and festivals, where he had the opportunity to play for the great figures of each period, among whom we find, for example, La Paquera de Jerez, as well as some artists who are not from the world of flamenco, like Serrat. But he also played for the likes of José Mercé, who calls on him for all his records and concerts. The two last albums by Mercé, Aire (2000) and Lío (2001) have been the fruit of this partnership. In his career as a concert guitarist, Moraíto has also earned recognition and success.
He has received several awards, like the Copa de Jerez (Jerez Cup) awarded by the Faculty of Flamencology in Jerez in 1984 and the Primer Premio Nacional de Guitarra Flamenca (First Prize for the National Flamenco Guitar) from the Los Cernícalos Peña (enthusiasts' club) in 1972 and 1986. |
