Joaquín Grilo
Male flamenco dancer
Name:Joaquín Grilo Mateos
Birth: 1968 Jerez de la Frontera, Cádiz

When he was only twenty years old, Joaquín Grilo started to receive significant awards which added momentum to an already promising career: an honourable mention in the "Juana la Macarrona" category in the eleventh Concurso Nacional de Arte Flamenco (National Flamenco Art Competition) in Córdoba (1986); the Premio de Danza (Dance Award) in the Televisión Española programme Gente Joven (1987); and the first prize in the "Vicente Escudero" category in the Concurso Nacional de Arte Flamenco in Córdoba (1989). Joaquín Grilo has gone on several tours around the world in the companies of Lola Flores, La Tati and Joaquín Cortés, and in shows by flamenco artists who had already become established, like Luisillo, Vicente Amigo and Paco de Lucía. Grilo has shared the stage with great figures of twentieth-century dancing, with contemporary bailaores and with young up-and-coming artists.

He has also presented his own shows all over the world, like En el candela (1993) and Apoteosis Flamenca (1996) and he created his own company in 1999. Jácara, a journey through all the flamenco palos (forms), was his debut show. Chano Domínguez used his zapateado (a rhythmic combination of sounds made by stepping with the toe, sole and heel of the foot) as if it were a percussion instrument, in the recording of a bulería version of a classic tune by Thelonius Monk.
