"Quite simply, I liked flamenco and I have devoted myself to it completely. I am not a guitar virtuoso. What I do is something else. What I have decided to do, has been to accompany well, but this has been my love: cante (flamenco singing)".

Juan Habichuela is currently considered one of the best flamenco guitarists, although out of duty to his father he also took his first steps in dancing with Paco El Sastre. To demonstrate the high estimation that he enjoys, one need only to look at the almost endless list of cantaores and bailaores that he has accompanied with his guitar: there must be practically no one left who hasn´t worked with him, or requested his cooperation. Furthermore, the ones on the list undoubtedly include the main figures from different generations and styles. And if this wasn´t enough, the prizes he has been awarded are also innumerable, among which the "Compás del Cante" prize and the II Galardón Flamenco calle de Alcalá, both in 1994, and a prize in the Concurso Nacional de Arte Flamenco (National Flamenco Art Competition) in Córdoba, twenty years earlier, are the most important.
In spite of such mastery, Juan Habichuela never made a record until 1999, "Juan Habichuela de la Zambra al Duende", in which many cantaores have been able to give back some of what they have received from his cooperation with them. After breaking the ice with his debut album, in the second (Campo del Príncipe), Habichuela even included several songs that he composed himself. His genius doesn´t finish here. Juan Habichuela is the patriarch of a great family of flamenco artists, which includes his brother Pepe Habichuela and his sons Juan and Antonio Carmona, both of whom are members of the band Ketama. |
