Federico García Lorca has been one of the poets who has contributed the most to flamenco (perhaps unwillingly). He was always attracted by popular culture, which inspired some of his books, especially "Romancero Gitano" (1928) and "Poema del Cante Jondo" (1931). This flamenco and gypsy flavour also finds expression in his theatre pieces, particularly in "Bodas de Sangre" (1933), "Yerma" (1934) and "La Casa de Bernarda Alba" (1939).
Lorca was a friend of several of the flamenco artists of the time, and he worked with some of them. With La Argentinita, accompanying her on the piano, he recorded ten old popular songs that he had collected himself, songs that were very much in use throughout the twentieth century, during which versions of them have been made, or they have been re-interpreted by cantaores like Enrique Morente, Carmen Linares, Basilio Villalta, Chano Domínguez and Ginesa Ortega. He also wrote texts in prose about flamenco, such as an anthology on La Niña de los Peines or the piece entitled "Juego y Teoría del Duende", in which he coined some fundamental flamenco expressions. In 1922, alongside other intellectuals and artists like Turina, Juan Ramón Jiménez and Falla, he organised the first Concurso de Cante Jondo (Flamenco Singing Competition) in Granada.
Federico García Lorca has always remained very close to flamenco. Several important performances have been staged, such as "Un rato, un minuto, un siglo... con Federico García Lorca" (1997), but the most important acknowledgement is probably the great number of cantaores who have chosen his writings to sing them, even though they had not been written for such a purpose: Camarón, Carmen Linares, Enrique Montoya, Enrique Morente, Juanito Valderrama, Lola Flores, Lole y Manuel, Manzanita, Pata Negra, Pepe Marchena… |
