Ojos de Brujo arose with a very clear purpose: to investigate the common elements shared by flamenco and other musical genres, in order to find a natural fusion without recurring to any pre-conceived formulae. At the start of the decade of the 1990s, Ramón Jiménez and Juanlu, who play the guitar and bass respectively, formed the original core of what would later become the band. One year later, the band was completed by Sabih, Panko, Marina, Max and Sergio, who were musicians from the Barcelona scene of the time (1996-1999).
Ojos de Brujo is a band that is often present in festivals and international events, as well as in compilation records. Their records are released in many countries, such as Holland, Belgium, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Australia and New Zealand. Moreover, Ojos de Brujo's artistic activity is not just limited to music.
Ojos de Brujo released its first record in 1999. It was "Vengue" ('duende' in Caló, the gypsy language), an experimental and open-minded album, that captivated the public and critics alike. The publicity that it enjoyed through word of mouth was such that their concerts filled up with audiences that were eager to enjoy the band's energetic and overwhelming live performances.
"Barí" (2002) was their second work, which is full of electronic elements, funk, reggae and quite a bit of hip hop. Nonetheless, it is the flamenco palos (forms) that provide the backbone for each of its songs: tangos, bulerías, rumbas, zambra, soleá...
Ojo de Brujo's cultural activity does not just involve music. They also cooperate with graffiti artists, they publish a fanzine ("Rumba contra el mundo", Rumba against the world), work alongside artists from different fields and take part in and develop video projects. |
