Chiquetete
Male flamenco singer
Name:José Antonio Cortés Pantoja
Birth: 1948 Algeciras. Cádiz

"I have a lot of things left to do, I think that I am at about fifty percent of my possibilities (...) Now I enjoy what I do better, I savour it, I am pleased when I sing, and I have an appetite for doing anything".
On several occasions, critics have said that Chiquetete is one of the best flamenco performers. However, he has only sung pure, orthodox flamenco during the first few years of his long artistic career (he has made over 35 records). In the decade of the eighties he passed over to melodic singing, sevillanas and Andalusian popular singing, the genre which brought him his greatest successes, at least insofar as sales as concerned. His record Aprende a soñar (re-released in 1997), the sixth in his career, sold a million copies, that is, it earned him ten platinum records. At the end of that decade, Chiquetete returned to flamenco, in projects that seek to retrieve the old cantes of Triana, and the ones from each of the eight Andalusian provinces (Almería, Cádiz, Córdoba, Huelva, Granada, Jáen, Málaga, Seville).

Born in Algeciras and raised in Triana, Chiquetete breathed in the flamenco atmosphere in this famous Seville neighbourhood, where he was the playmate of other artists of recognised prestige like Lole Montoya, Isabel Pantoja (who is also his cousin), Manuel Molina, Manolo Domínguez El Rubio. With the last two, he made his first performances, first under the name Los Algericeños, and later, Los Gitanillos del Tardón.

Until the end of the seventies, Chiquetete sang to accompany the dancing of veteran artists like Matilde Coral, Farruco, Pepa Coral, La Contrahecha, La Húngara, Curro Velez. In these same years he shared the stage in several tablaos with other artists: Lola Flores, Chocolate, Miguel Maya, Trini España, Manuel Molina, Manolo Sevilla, El Niño de San Lorenza, Manolo Caracol, Marifé de Triana... In 1975, the First Prize that he won in the Festival de Cante Antonio Mairena (Antonio Mairena Singing Festival) in Mairena de Alcor (Seville) saw him recognised as a flamenco figure.
