Behind the collective pseudonym El Barrio, lies the original personality of José Luis Figuereo. The pseudonym, which means "neighbourhood" is a tribute to the neighbourhood in which he was born and grew up, that of Santa María (in Cádiz).
Before he bacame known as a singer, El Barrio was a flamenco guitarist in many tablaos in Cádiz and Madrid, where he began playing when he was twelve. He has also accompanied other artists with his guitar in their recordings and concerts. Since he began his solo career as a singer, he has been very active: between 1996 and 2002 he had already released five records, in which he was also reponsible for writing the lyrics, inspired by everyday tribulations.
Triana, Alameda, Medina Azahara, Cái, Manolo García and other groups from the so-called Andalusian rock scene are his most important influences. He argues that his music follows this path more than that of orthodox flamenco, although he also knows the latter and can perform it with great ability, especially the sounds from Cádiz, one of the cradles of flamenco. Thus, in his record "Me voy al mundo" (2002), he has composed a ranchera por bulerías. |
