Antonio El Pipa was born in Jerez de la Frontera, in the midst of one of the gypsy families with the deepest roots and flamenco tradition in the Santiago neighbourhood. He is the grandson of the woman who was the matriarch of flamenco dancing in Jerez, Tía Juana la del Pipa and the nephew of Juana and Antonio El Pipa, from whom he inherited his stage name.
A bailaor (flamenco dancer) of high standing who was moulded in his own family milieu, he became a regular in artistic groups from his hometown of Jerez since he was very young. Throughout his now lengthy career, he has been part of companies such as: Manuel Morao y Gitanos de Jerez, Ballet de Cristina Hoyos, and the companies of La Tati, Lola Flores, Ricardo Franco.
He has also performed alongside artists of the standing of José Mercé, Tomatito, Manuela Carrasco, Carmen Linares and even Matilde Coral herself, who he especially admires. Moreover, he has shared the stage with important personalities like José Carreras or Isabel Pantoja, and with bands such as the Orquesta de Cámara de Sevilla (Seville Chamber Orchestra).
With his own company, he has set up a number of shows, among which the ones that stand out are "Puntales" and "Pasión y Ley". His latest stage show to date is "De Tablao", a successful production that pays tribute to the role played by flamenco tablaos.
Antonio is considered a faithful and legitimate heir of the purest and most authentic gypsy dancing. His dancing is free from tricks and needless embellishment, and is far removed from the latest trends in flamenco dancing, although it is respectful of them. |
