Before entering the world of flamenco, Michel Camilo was already a musician with a great career behind him as a virtuoso pianist and as a composer: a member of his country´s National Symphonic Orchestra, of which he was the director in 1987, and a university professor, who had released several jazz records, won a few prizes, including an Emmy (1997), and undertaken several tours around Europe, America and Japan.
Chano Domínguez guided him the first time that he approached flamenco. He also worked with Ketama on their record Pá gente con alma (1992), but his most important contribution to flamenco occurred in the year 2000, alongside the guitarist Tomatito. The result of this partnership was a world tour, the record Spain. Michel Camilo y Tomatito (2000) and a Latin Grammy for the "Best Latin Jazz Album". On the record, the only sounds that are heard are Michel Camilo´s piano and Tomatito´s guitar, without any adornment, not even percussion. The work has been well received by the public and critics alike. It has almost unanimously been described as a perfect blend of flamenco and jazz. |
