3. Shopping: the maillot, the skirt and the shoes
by Susana Navalón
Translated by Yasha Maccanico

You have already chosen your school, and all you need is the basic material for your first classes. The most important thing are the shoes. They must be comfortable, which means that you will have to try several kinds until you find the ones that are best for you. There are different heel sizes and, if you´re not used to wearing high heels, the best thing you can do is to buy a semi-professional model with a 3 or 5 centimetre heel at the most. You will also have to choose between suede and leather. The suede ones tend to be more comfortable, but they also lose their shape more easily, and they last for a shorter time than leather ones. If you want to avoid grazes, remember never to wear your shoes without tights.

As for the practice skirt, it is fundamental that it doesn´t weigh much, that it glides well and that it is long. People tend to tell you that the feet should be visible under the skirt, but don´t buy one that is too short, because it looks ridiculous. It is better for you to have to pick it up with your hands in order to zapatear (making a rhythmic combination of sounds by stepping with the toe, sole and heel of the foot). Whether you want it with ruffles or without them depends on your own taste, but when it comes to picking a colour, go for something discrete: black, brown, claret...

The maillot (vest or jersey) will have to be of a plain colour, with a long sleeve for the winter, or sleeveless in the summer. Short sleeves are not recommended because they split the figure of the arms. Lycra is the textile that is most commonly used, although they are sometimes made of cotton. You must also be careful with the colours you pick, as sweatmarks are immediately noticeable on certain colours. Black is the most hard-wearing.
