You can start dancing straight away
1. Where to start from: what you need to have to dance flamenco
by Susana Navalón
Translated by Yasha Maccanico

To begin to dance flamenco you have to be sure of what you´re doing and be patient; it is not something that you can learn in a couple of days, and if someone tells you that it is, s/he is trying to con you. In fact, flamenco is a kind of dance in which, apart from the difficulty of learning the steps and movements, there are also codes to communicate with the guitarist and cantaor (flamenco singer), specific characteristics for each palo (form), the feeling and artistry that must go into it...

However, this does not mean that it should scare you off. Quite the opposite. Its main virtue is that it is a dance whose appeal derives from the personality and artistry of the person performing it, whereas other qualities such as youth, resistance or flexibility that are required in other forms of dancing, are not indispensable. With a minimum aptitude, almost anyone can manage to learn and enjoy it by studying and practicing, with perseverance and lots of heart.
